The American men’s skateboarding team made a powerful statement at the inaugural Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) in Shanghai, securing four of the six podium spots in both park and street events. These stellar performances have propelled Team USA to dominate the World Skateboard Ranking, holding the top three positions in park and two of the top three in street.

Dominance in Shanghai

At the conclusion of the OQS Shanghai, Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallist Jagger Eaton commented on the team’s success, stating, “All of us are incredibly competitive – some more than others. But our biggest goal as a country is to win medals. That’s our whole goal.”

Before anyone can secure a medal, skateboarders have one more opportunity to boost their individual rankings to qualify for Paris 2024. This final chance will be at the Olympic Qualifier Series in Budapest from June 20 to 23.

What’s at Stake at OQS Budapest?

In skateboarding, the points system is divided into three parts: results from prior competitions count for one-third, and each of the two-part OQS series counts for another third. The points earned at the OQS are crucial in determining which 88 skateboarders from around the world will qualify for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can secure a maximum of three quota spots for each event, meaning each Olympic team could feature up to 12 skateboarders. After the final OQS, the top-ranked skateboarders will secure their spots for Paris 2024.

How to Qualify for Skateboarding at Paris 2024

Athletes’ participation in the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their country. The NOCs have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games.

Results and Expectations in Street

The OQS Shanghai provided a glimpse into what to expect at OQS Budapest for Team USA’s men’s street skateboarders. Jagger Eaton advanced from the top spot in semifinals to win the finals, significantly boosting his ranking from 12th to second. Chris Joslin finished third, climbing from 18th to eighth in rankings. Nyjah Huston placed fifth, dropping his ranking to third.
