Sherpa Guide Kami Rita Completes Record 30th Ascent of Mount Everest

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Renowned Sherpa mountain guide Kami Rita has returned from Mount Everest after his record 30th ascent of the world’s highest peak. The 54-year-old guide reached the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) summit earlier this week, marking his second climb of the peak this month and once again breaking his own record for the most successful climbs.

Upon arrival at the airport in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, Kami Rita expressed his unwavering commitment to continue his climbs. “I will continue climbing and will be back again next year and for at least one or two more years,” he told reporters.

Despite his plans to eventually retire from guiding, Kami Rita intends to remain active on the mountain, likely taking on roles such as team leader or manager at the base camp. His passion for Everest and dedication to the mountaineering community remain strong.

Kami Rita’s journey to the summit this month included his first climb on May 12 and his record-breaking ascent just days later. Last year, he also scaled Mount Everest twice, setting and then extending the record for the most climbs of the peak.

His closest competitor, fellow Sherpa guide Pasang Dawa, has completed 27 successful ascents of Mount Everest, highlighting the fierce yet respectful rivalry among these elite climbers.

Kami Rita’s mountaineering career began in 1994, and he has since made the trek nearly every year. His expertise and skills are indispensable to the safety and success of foreign climbers who aspire to conquer the summit of Everest. The legacy of his family in mountaineering is notable; his father was among the first Sherpa mountain guides.

Beyond Everest, Kami Rita has scaled several other formidable peaks, including K2, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, and Lhotse, adding to his impressive resume.

This climbing season, which is nearing its end, has seen more than 500 climbers successfully reach the summit of Mount Everest from the Nepali side. The majority of these climbs occur in April and May when the weather conditions are most favorable.

Everest, a symbol of human endurance and exploration, was first climbed in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepali Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. The legacy of these pioneering climbers lives on through the remarkable achievements of guides like Kami Rita, who continue to inspire and lead the way for adventurers from around the world.
