Pedro and Tomas Odell, two brothers from El Chaltén, Patagonia, are making waves in the world of alpine climbing. Raised in the shadows of the mighty Cerro Chaltén, they’ve honed their skills on these rugged peaks and are now leading a bold new wave of Patagonian alpinists.
A Graduation Unlike Any Other
While their classmates at Secundario No. 28 Nancy M. Arco were preparing for graduation on December 8, 2023, Tomas Odell was reaching the summit of Cerro Torre. The breathtaking view of the Hielo Continental, bathed in the golden evening light, was a stark contrast to the local gymnasium where diplomas were being handed out.
The Climb of a Lifetime
Just a day before, Tomas (18) and Pedro (20) embarked on a challenging ascent of Cerro Torre’s Southeast Ridge. The brothers tackled this daunting route in a continuous 25-hour push, showcasing their exceptional skills and endurance. Their achievement is a testament to their dedication and the supportive climbing community in El Chaltén.
Roots in a Climbing Haven
The Odell brothers are among the first generation of climbers born and raised in El Chaltén, a town that has grown from a small, rugged settlement into a renowned climbing destination. Their parents, Max Odell and Marcella Antonutti, both experienced climbers, moved to El Chaltén in the 1990s and raised their family amidst its towering peaks.
Training from an Early Age
Growing up, Pedro and Tomas were immersed in climbing culture. Their father’s “training program” included bouldering at age 3, climbing gym lessons at 5, backcountry skiing at 8, and technical alpine climbing by 13. This early and intensive exposure to climbing has molded them into the accomplished alpinists they are today.
A Promising Future
With numerous impressive ascents already under their belts, including technical routes on Cerro Torre and Aguja Guillaumet, the Odell brothers are poised to become leading figures in alpine climbing. Their journey from the Cerro Chaltén skyline to the summits of some of the world’s most challenging peaks is just beginning.
