Novak Djokovic heads into the French Open with a new coaching arrangement and some questions lingering about his motivation.
Zimonjic Not a Long-Term Solution
While long-time friend Nenad Zimonjić accompanied Djokovic to recent tournaments, their collaboration appears to be temporary. “Nenad was there to help me as a friend and as a mentor,” Djokovic clarified.
Boris Bošnjaković Takes the Reins
Filling the coaching role for Roland-Garros is Boris Bošnjaković, a familiar face within Djokovic’s team. “Boris is a part of my technical team… We’ve been cooperating for several years,” Djokovic explained. Bošnjaković will focus on analyzing opponents, match strategies, and preparations for the French Open.
Motivation a Work in Progress
Djokovic acknowledged a lack of consistent motivation this season, reaching semifinals but not finals in three tournaments. “The motivation varies, it’s not consistent,” he admitted. However, his focus remains on competing for Grand Slams and representing Serbia. “At Slams, there is still a lot of motivation,” he emphasized.
Focus on Majors, Not Ranking
Ranking is no longer a top priority for Djokovic. “Whether I add one, five or ten more weeks, it doesn’t concern me,” he stated. His primary goal is to remain a contender for major titles.
Enjoying the Process, Adapting Mentally
Djokovic also acknowledged the challenge of finding enjoyment on tour without his closest entourage. “I am trying to enjoy the whole process… It’s a new phase mentally that I need to process and adapt to,” he said.
Looking Ahead: Djokovic vs. Herbert
The 24-time Grand Slam champion will face Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the French Open’s first round on Tuesday. As the defending champion, Djokovic will be aiming to repeat his 2023 victory against Casper Ruud.
