As a young and fit hiker in my early twenties, I scoffed at the idea of using hiking poles. I didn’t see the need for them, especially since I had no history of injuries. However, my perspective shifted dramatically when I finally decided to give them a try. Little did I know that hiking poles would become an indispensable part of my outdoor adventures.

In 2019, I planned a five-day trek across Zion National Park, anticipating snowy conditions at higher elevations. While unexpected snowfall derailed our backpacking plans, I still decided to test out the hiking poles on a moderate 10-mile hike. To my surprise, I experienced significantly less soreness and fatigue after the hike compared to my usual post-hike discomfort. Could it be the poles?

As I continued to use hiking poles on various terrains and distances, I noticed a consistent improvement in my endurance and overall hiking experience. I felt less strain on my lower extremities, allowing me to hike longer, faster, and with greater comfort. Intrigued by my personal findings, I delved into research to understand the science behind hiking poles.

A review article published in Wilderness & Environmental Medicine shed light on the benefits of hiking poles. Studies suggested that hiking poles reduce fatigue, improve endurance, enhance balance, and even increase walking speed. They also help distribute weight more evenly, reducing stress on the lower body, particularly during downhill descents and when carrying heavy packs.

Furthermore, hiking poles promote a more natural gait, resulting in longer strides and less compression force on knee joints. Despite some skepticism surrounding the calorie-burning aspect and concerns about overreliance on poles, my firsthand experience outweighed any doubts.

For me, the decision to use hiking poles was a game-changer. While individual preferences and hiking goals may vary, I believe that everyone should give hiking poles a try. Regardless of age or fitness level, the benefits they offer in terms of endurance, joint support, and overall hiking enjoyment are undeniable.

At 32 years old, I am now a passionate advocate for hiking poles. Whether they’re considered fashionable or not, their impact on my hiking experience has been revolutionary. So, next time you hit the trails, consider bringing along a pair of hiking poles. You might be surprised by the difference they can make.
