The traditional ‘Opening Day’ for the ski resorts in Australia is the weekend of the monarch’s official birthday, which is the second Monday in June.

It is a national holiday and this year it falls on June 10th June.

Sometimes there is good snow, and sometimes there is not.

So far things are looking promising for the approaching season, though some decent natural snowfall would be welcome.

Here’s a round-up of some social media posts from the resorts in Oz as they prepare for the 2024 season:

We reported earlier on conditions in the southern hemisphere with South America leading the snow stakes as resorts open early:

Ski resorts in New Zealand are also making preparations for the coming season.

Cardrona in New Zealand is one area preparing.

It’s ski season kicks off in under a month with some improvements:

  • Increased snowmaking capacity
  • 200 spaces to the Valley View carpark
  • Work has started on Soho Basin Development

The Soho Basin Development Project is due for completion in 2025.

It will make it New Zealand’s biggest ski area when the new lift and terrain opens.

Sustainability also remains a key priority for Cardrona.

The ski areas will continue their free access road shuttles this winter, as well as their zero-landfill waste initiative – no landfill products will be sold at any of the food and beverage outlets at either mountain.

Plus skiers and snowboarders will again be encouraged to take away their own litter rubbish.

Cardrona is set to open on June 15th.

Its sister resort of Treble Cone is to open two weeks later on June 29th.
