Aussie Teen Arisa Trew Makes History with First Female 900 in Skateboarding

Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk is singing the praises of Australian teenager Arisa Trew after she landed a groundbreaking 900-degree spin in a half-pipe, becoming the first woman to achieve the feat.

Trew Soars with Historic 900

Trew’s incredible accomplishment was captured on video and shared by Hawk on his Instagram, where he congratulated her for shattering barriers: “Arisa Trew just became the first female to land a 900. Glass ceilings are so 2023. Congrats.”

The 900 requires completing two and a half rotations in mid-air on a skateboard, a testament to Trew’s exceptional skill and courage. Trew expressed her gratitude to Hawk in the comments, calling him an inspiration.

No Stranger to Breaking Records

This isn’t Trew’s first time etching her name in skateboarding history. At just 13 years old, she landed the first-ever female 720 (two full rotations) in competition at Hawk’s Vert Alert event. She repeated the feat at last year’s X-Games, earning gold in Vert skating and the prestigious action sportsperson of the year award at the Laureus World Sports Awards.

Olympic Aspirations

While Vert skating isn’t part of the Olympics, Trew has her sights set on representing Australia in the park competition at the 2024 Paris Games. Her recent victory in the Shanghai Olympic Qualifier series has boosted her chances considerably.

Focus on Budapest Qualifier

Trew is setting her sights on another strong performance at the upcoming Budapest Olympic Qualifier (June 20-23). A good showing would all but guarantee her a spot in Paris.

“In Budapest, I’m just going to do my best, land some solid runs, and have fun,” Trew said.

Eyes on the Podium and Paris

The top 20 athletes in each discipline, with a maximum of three per country, will qualify for the Paris Olympics. Australia can send a maximum of 12 athletes (three per gender, per discipline). Currently ranked second in the Women’s Park Olympic Rankings, Trew is well-positioned to achieve her Olympic dreams.

The skateboarding competition in Paris will be held at the Place de la Concorde, with preliminary rounds starting on August 6th. The skateboarding world will be watching with anticipation as Arisa Trew continues to defy expectations and push the boundaries of the sport.
