In a daring display of skill and nerve, Alex Honnold made headlines back in 2011 with his free-solo ascent of The Phoenix, a formidable 5.13a trad climb in Yosemite. This achievement was among the earliest recorded instances of a climber tackling a 5.13 route without the safety of ropes.
The Phoenix, known for its technical difficulty and exposure, was captured on film by Peter Mortimer from Reel Rock, showcasing Honnold’s breathtaking ascent. Just a day later, Honnold continued to defy gravity with a free-solo of The Chouinard-Herbert (V 5.11+), a challenging 15-pitch route on the Sentinel.
Reflecting on his free-solo of The Phoenix, Honnold remarked, “I thought I could do it, so I figured I might as well. It’s a pretty amazing route, and the waterfall below it is raging right now. It’s a special place.”
The daring feats of Alex Honnold continue to inspire awe and admiration in the climbing community and beyond, cementing his legacy as one of the most fearless and skilled climbers of our time.
