Dan Rubinstein, an increasingly obsessed paddleboarder, embarks on a quest to become one with the water. People warned him about the St. Lawrence River: its width, windiness, big waves, fast currents, speedy boats, cold springtime water, and sudden thunderstorms. To some extent, these warnings were valid. Water safety is crucial, especially when navigating a stand-up paddleboard loaded with camping gear, covering 40 to 50 kilometres daily. But fear of the unknown often holds us back, making us suspicious of strangers and reluctant to explore.
Thus, Rubinstein finds himself on a 14-foot inflatable paddleboard in the middle of the St. Lawrence on an overcast Friday morning in early June. He crosses a 10-kilometre stretch of open water west of Montreal, from uninhabited Dowker Island, where he camped the previous night, to the Mohawk community of Kahnawà:ke, where he booked a bed and breakfast for the weekend. This journey began four days earlier on the Ottawa River, marking the first leg of a 1,900-kilometre paddling circuit from Ottawa to Ottawa via Montreal, New York City, and Toronto.
Rubinstein’s expedition aims to immerse himself in “blue space” — the aquatic equivalent of green space — and connect with others who do the same. He seeks to explore how spending time in, on, or around water can enhance mental and physical health and foster a sense of stewardship toward the natural world.
