Francesco Berardino, a rising star in the world of bouldering, has recently captured the climbing community’s attention with his remarkable achievements. Over the span of just two weeks in January, the 20-year-old Italian climber successfully ascended three challenging V16 boulder problems in Switzerland: Celestite, REM, and Return of the Dreamtime.

Berardino’s impressive feats were highlighted in a new film released by Mellow, showcasing his sends of Celestite and Return of the Dreamtime. These climbs are not merely physical challenges but also tests of technical prowess and mental fortitude.

The journey began with Berardino’s ascent of Celestite, originally established by Dave Graham. Located in Valle Bavona, this V16 is known for its intricate sequences and demanding beta. The climb features a series of upside-down kneebars and delicate hand matches, followed by a powerful roof pull leading to a high and precarious slab exit. Berardino tackled this technical masterpiece with precision, marking his first major achievement of the series.

Next on his list was REM in Cresciano, a problem set by Guiliano Cameroni. Considered one of the most difficult climbs of the trio, REM posed a significant challenge to Berardino’s climbing skills. With its complex moves and strenuous sections, including a debated grade of upper-end V15 or lower-end V16, REM pushed Berardino’s limits further.

Undeterred by the demanding climbs he had already conquered, Berardino swiftly moved on to achieve the second ascent of Return of the Dreamtime V16, originally climbed by Yannick Flohé. This problem combines the challenging sequences of Dreamtime V15 with the technical finish of Somnolence V13, requiring a blend of strength, technique, and endurance.

Francesco Berardino’s remarkable achievements in January underscore his rapid progression and exceptional talent in the sport of bouldering. As he continues to push boundaries and set new milestones, Berardino stands out as a promising figure in the global climbing community, inspiring climbers worldwide with his dedication and skill.
